What Being Part of a Coalition Means
Simon Dodd wrote an absolute must read on Huckabee’s victory in Iowa and the reaction of some traditional and fiscally conservatives to his victory and surge in the polls. As you all know, I’m quite a critic of Huckabee myself, but I think that Simon’s on to something when he basically argues that being part of a coalition means that you’re part of a “social contract wherein I expect you to honor the result if it goes my way and you thus legitimately expet me to honor the result if it goes your way.”

Simon’s post is the most mature reaction I’ve seen from any conservative who opposes Huckabee. He’s the first person I’ve seen to be consistent, since many of those who cried foul about the evangelicals threatening to leave the party are now the same ones who say they’d boycott the GOP vote for pres if it’s Huckabee.
I guess I just don’t see the coalition serving my interests. 25 years in power, and they’ve accomplished quite the opposite of what they promised fiscal conservatives. Evangelicals have gotten nothing, so what do we get from this coalition? Less government meddling and secularism than the Democrats? Maybe.
The Democratic party has its own fault lines and I think its quite possible that new coalitions can be formed.
