Iran Warns Netherlands

January 22nd, 2008 By: Michael van der Galien | Tags:

Nice: “An Iranian MP says the Netherlands will face widespread protests if it gives the green light to the screening of an anti-Islam movie.”

Head of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said that the Iranian nation would react to any insult to Islam.

The senior Iranian lawmaker added that Muslims will not tolerate any insult to Islam.

Iran expects The Hague to ban the controversial movie, otherwise Majlis (the Parliament) will call on the government to reconsider its relations with the Netherlands, he said.

Frankly, I have no sympathy for Wilders, but this makes me even more convinced that we should stand by him in this particular case. The more extremists threaten us, the more firm we should be.

“Free speech”?? Funny, bashing Islam is “free speech” but bashing Jews is “racist anti-Semitism”

From what I understand, there is some bashing going on here…tearing up pages of the Koran strikes me as pretty gratuitous. On the other hand, you can’t deny that what appears to be the gist of the movie – to "show that Islam is intolerant, aggressive and encourages terrorism" definitely has a basis in reality.

Which is what makes the point made by hass absurd. Bashing either is free speech. The difference is, some seem to think Islam has a right to violently (or lawfully, even) oppress the speech that offends it. Guess what? We wouldn’t have worry about the right to free speech if most  of it didn’t offend somebody somewhere – but it all does. There is very little opinion you can hold that won’t offend somebody somewhere.

So we are either going to let those with the power and ability to shut up the opposition do so…or we are going to have free speech. It’s pretty simple, really.

That should say ‘bashing’ either moslems or jews is free speech.
