Surprise: Thompson Not Willing To Endorse Anyone
My, my: Jim Geraghty brings the news that Fred Thompson is indeed likely to drop out soon and adds that a source close to the former Senator has said that he’s not willing to be anyone’s running mate and that he’s also not willing to endorse any of the other candidates. If true, that’s a big blow to John McCain.
Why? Because McCain and Thompson are great friends. Everybody and his dog expected Thompson to endorse his friend. If he doesn’t it means that he truly believes that McCain isn’t conservative enough. That’s a blow for the Senator for Arizona.
It’s good news for Romney: most Thompson supporters will probably go to him.

There’s a reality check in order here before anyone starts talking about dropping out. At time of writing, the leader of the GOP field, Romney, has won 72 delegates to the convention. The next closest contender, McCain, has won 38. It’s true that Thompson has so far won only 8 delegates. But the elephant in the room is that in Florida next Tuesday, there are 114 delegates that will be awarded, which is more than the combined total currently controlled by Romney and McCain. The Tuesday after that, twenty states will choose one thousandd and thirty-eight delegates to the GOP Convention – nearly four times the total number of delegates every candidate going into that election combined. In a race this unsettled, I think that anyone talking about top tier contenders dropping out at this point has to be off their rocker.
So…. You need a new dark horse candidate?
Well, you’re in luck. In Arizona, there are several dozen candidates to choose from due to a strange provision in the state’s election law. To get on the primary ballot, you only needed to file an application.
If you visit ProjectWhiteHouse08.com, you can read (and watch!) the policies of all the dark-horse candidates, from the eye-patch-wearing Republican Sean "CF" Murphy to the ultra-lib, trash-talking, conceptual-artist Democrat Libby "Doctress Neutopia" Hubbard.
And all of them are competing in a "reality journalism" experiment for the Tucson Weekly’s endorsement.
Tomorrow night’s the official Project White House debate, which you can watch online through ProjectWhiteHouse08.com
