Michelle Obama Describes America
Watch an interesting video of Michelle Obama giving a speech at the University of South Carolina. The speech as a whole is quite interesting, but this one remark once again exposes her true feelings about America.
“It’s easier to hold on to your own stereotypes and misconceptions, it makes you feel justified in your own ignorance…That’s America.”
Can’t Barack tell his wife to tone it down? People talk about how Bill Clinton hurt Hillary’s chances, but what about Michelle? She isn’t exactly helpful either. She had a reasonably good message, but then says something that’s completely outrageous. This line could have been deleted, and the speech would stand. A completely useless slur.

admin: racist epithets = ban
I actually think if she’d just substituted "that’s human nature" for "that’s America", the line would have been perfectly acceptable.
Of course there was still a ton of stuff where I disagreed with her (the "who’s gonna make decisions about…" part, she plays on THEIR fears that bad corporations are gonna make those decisions, while to me the greater fear should be that the government will make them for us.)
Ironic, even, that she begins riffing about how important it is not to fear, then later she says "Be suspicious!"
These comments are all part of the black liberation theology that the Obama’s have been exposed to at their "church."

"Ya’ll not talking to each other. [Not] taking advantage of the fact that you’re in this diverse community. Because sometimes it’s easier to hold on to your own stereotypes and misconceptions, it makes you feel justified in your own ignorance…That’s America."– Michelle Obama I agree in the unstated sentiment of this piece that in a political contest of this magnitude (POTUS) every word counts. In our attempt to defeat our opponents, nonetheless, there is plenty of legitimate fodder available without editing statements in order to amplify negative perception. "exposes her true feelings about America." Careful friend, your trunk is showing.

Mrs. Obama "exposes her true feelings about America." you say. Careful friend, your trunk is showing.
Kind of like her pastor, Jeremiah Wright hanging on to his own stereotypes and misconceptions of white America? Kind of like Obama characterizing his grandmother as a typical white person. Sounds like their the ones hanging on to stereotypes and misconceptions. Kind of like her stereotyping America? The hypocrisy is breathtaking.
america is just not ‘white’ America. Everyone–every ethnic group, age group, gender and political affiliation hold some stereotypes. She’s right. That is America. But not perpetually and I think she point out that change is possible with activism.
C Stanley, that’s such a good point about the ‘be suspicious’ thing. hilarious.
Once again Mrs. Obama puts her foot in here mouth. She has such a distorted vision of the USA. Then when you have been brought along on the shoulders of "diversity" "quotas" and other social programs that give some (because of race) one a free pass. No wonder she thinks the USA is unfair…she is the product of it! She and Mr. Obama will be turned down by a majority of folks that know Racism when they see it.
Michelle, dear, you are a racist too, or you would not continue in that mindset that white and black are ubersymbols, that the way you are talking is truth. You had a great opportunity on scholarships and affirmative action props, and I, an old white lady, came out of poverty and hardscrabble with no scholarship, and my daddy’s $250.00 a month was what saw me through. Your speech that I am listening to is a degrading of me as you are saying "whites" were of you. Who paid your way?
Forgot to add that I have a master’s degree in English and spent 41 years teaching in Texas public schools, both segregation and integration time.
Dear Lou Ellen Brown, how do you know Michelle Obama got into school on the basis of affirmative action? What makes you assume she wasn’t as smart as the other white kids who got into her school? Maybe you ought to look inside yourself and question why you make assumptions like that. Your statement, "Who paid your way?" says it all. That’s some white superiority right there. God I hate overly entitled, narrow minded white people. And I am white. I guess I can get away with saying that without being called "racist." Try walking a mile in someone else’s shoes, people. I know it’s hard. It requires some imagination and empathy. But you can do it — just try.
Im a conservative and I don’t mind that line, assuming that she is talking about herself and her husband as well. I’m am willing to admit that I feel fear when alone on a dark street and that fear level goes up when a young black man walks into sight. But I feel safer if an old black man comes into sight. Does that make me ageist too?
I thought here speech was fine. Definitely not another Rev. Wright moment. I have to admit two thoughts came to me during the speech:
1) I was waiting for her to say "vote if you want to stick it to the man."
2) He extended riff on other’s low expectations reminded of GW’s statement "The quiet racism of lowere expectations"
So, no big deal. This was ok but come on this was before the SC primary. That was a long time ago.
I think Michelle hit the nail on the head. The reason the US is so divided now is not because half of us are right and half of us are wrong but because people are holding so tightly to their fears and belief systems that they are no longer capable of having balanced discussion . A blunt word for this mindset is ignorance. People won’t like that word-they will choose, again, predictability, to be offended rather than try to see the truthfulness and hope in what she was saying, and the overwhelmingly positive call to young people to participate fully in democracy. Michelle Obama, as an American, has the right to call it as she sees it. She has a lot of love for the country or she would not be dedicating her own life and that of her family to its service. She is offering work, service, integrity and, yes, some plain, honest talk. I think we could all do with listening to and assessing varying points of view rather than shutting down our understanding at the slightest whiff of "controversy".
Good call, Ruth! Notice how Ruth is acting like an adult. Notice how BO’s speech on race was directed to us like we’re adults.
Goodness, how much handwringing can we do about race discussions. We have been discussing, debating, forming policy, throwing money, educating, and creating holidays regarding this issue for 50 years, with a lot of positive results. Who are they kidding…. Most people have got teh message by now, and have adjusted. Mrs. Obama’s pastor however has not figured it out, so the assumption is that the rest of America hasn’t dealt with it. She might want to change her church so she isn’t so blind about the changes that have happened in the last 50 years, regarding race. Enough of the "we need more race dicussions" tripe!!! We need to find another church, if it is stuck in the race ideology of 1935.
The Obama camp loves to make it look like only whites are racist, and Michelle plays up the black victim race card try to make those who don’t agree with Barack, look like the racists, while she calls the rest of American "ignorant". Michelle Obama turned me off long ago with her "black man" speech and then her declaration that only now is she proud to be an American. Talk about a slap at America’s history and the US military!
Now, it is rumored that the GOP dug up a video of Michelle railing against "Whitey" in Rev. Wrights pulpit and will drop that bomb in America’s lap in the fall election if Barack Obama is nominated.
Ruth, we all have our own reasons for voting or not voting for a candidate, but just because we disagree with BO or MO doesn’t make us ignorant, uneducated or blind. It called Democracy and freedom of choice, as well as freedom of speech, but onone wants a hatefull, mean-spirited First lady who uses her skin color as a crutch.
Michell Obama is a bigot. What a first lady she would make! Has anyone noticed how BHO puts his chin in the air like such a snob! Stupid Whitey at his feet. What fools. They are so stupid it is shameful!
Nan -
Your own bigotry is blatant and transparent.
"Stupid Whitey", huh? You used that phrase, while neither of the Obamas ever have - and you’re calling them ‘bigots’?
As for the "chin in the air", I suppose every member of our military who keeps their shoulders back, stomachs in, chests out, and chin up is also a snob? It’s called ‘posture’.
And Cheryl, running with unsubstantiated rumors is as dumb as running with scissors - there is no "whitey" tape. Michelle was discussing Bush when she repeatedly said "Why’d he" do this, and "Why’d he" do that, but bigoted people hear what they want to hear and believe what they want to believe… Hell, who needs facts?
Unfortunately….what Michele said is true. Some folks are more comfortable "wallowing" in their own ignorance than getting out of their comfort zones.
