McCain; Time to Get Serious

August 3rd, 2008 By: Michael van der Galien | Tags:

Dick Morris and Eileen McGann believe that John McCain is wasting valuable time before attacking his Democratic opponent in November, Barack Obama. According to the two, one has to take out one’s opponent in the summer; if you wait until September to destroy him it’s too little, and especially too late.

So, what should the Republican leader do, according to these experts?

McCain needs to make voters afraid of Obama. Not, as he suggests self-servingly, by emphasizing that he “doesn’t look like all the other presidents on dollar bills,” but by hitting him on the two fronts where it would really hurt — the economy and national security. Obama’s inexperience and the wildly liberal proposals he has made in his primary campaigning, both set him up for a crippling blow this month.

Fear, fear, fear. Whatever you do, make people afraid.

What’s truly sad about the above is that it works. Making people afraid pays off.

They could simply talk about their policy differences, and explain why their own views are good, while the other’s views are not. But no. That will not suffice. After all, who wants to listen to boring, intelligent policy debates? Right. No one. So, instead, you just have to portray your opponent as evil, and you’ve got to make people afraid of him (or her). That’s what Morris and McGann and many other political experts in the US believe.

Sadly, history has shown them to be correct. It’s sad, it’s  horrible… but true.
