Michael Phelps’ Diet

American swimmer Michael Phelps is the hero of this year’s Olympic Games. Thus far he has won six golden medals. He could very well win eight in total; that would be a record possibly impossible to break.

One of the questions he gets most frequently asked is how he does it. This is how:

He has a magic diet. You should not try his diet at home, but it seems to be working rather well for him.

The foundation is as follows: eat much. Eat like an elephant.

The man eats 12,000 calories a day. He’s basically eating all the time. The only time he’s not is when he’s swimming; swimming is like a break from eating for him.

Here is what Phelps eats on any given day:

Breakfast: Three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise. Two cups of coffee. One five-egg omelet. One bowl of grits. Three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar. Three chocolate-chip pancakes.

Lunch: One pound of enriched pasta. Two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayo on white bread. Energy drinks packing 1,000 calories.

Dinner: One pound of pasta. An entire pizza. More energy drinks.

One wonders whether a human being can deal with so much food. Well, stop wondering; he can. The reason is that he exercises a lot. He burns so many calories that the question isn’t whether he eats too much, but whether he eats enough. He’s swimming all day, basically abusing his body. The man is alike a machine.

In order to do that he needs energy. And lots of it. If he doesn’t eat constantly, his muscles will weaken and he won’t be able to win as much as he does now.

Interestingly enough, although the above sounds insane Kathleen Laquale, an athletic trainer and nutritionist who teaches at Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts pointed out that cyclists in the Tour de France commonly consume 8,000 to 10,000 calories a day.

I was amused at Michael’s mother talking about his flatulence. Since he swallows so much air in five hour a day, every day pratice, and at the speed with which he moves, Phelps breaks his gases up to 250 times per day. Don’t ask me who does the counting. Mrs. Phelp’s ventured "some of that isn’t necessary I don’t think but the combination of swallowed air and the necessity for 12,000 cal. days makes it inevitable". Mrs. Phelps admitted that Michael does not bother to hold his winds anymore. "if he started trying to hold back the flatuence, he says that it would take-over his life. We did manage to cut him down to half of that for his graduation day ceremony!". Go for the GOLD, Michael. Lots of people have to break their gases for much less cause!

that seem preposterous that one person can eat that much , and the rest of us just gains weight. what does it come down to are we just lazy?
I know that everyone disagrees just how many calories we lose in 1 hour of excercise, but even so i find it hard to believe one person either excercises that much or just gets blessed with natural genetic.. its completly unfair. Tha t being said we don’t know that Phelps is being completly honest either, because we dont know what secrets real olympians have–, he could be exaggerating or just not telling all there is to what hes doing. That’s the nature of not letting your competition being in the know, and if he ever comes outs with a diet/excercise book, trust me- he won’t let it go without a multi-million dollar payoff.
