The month of August was, it was announced on Sunday, team Obama’s best fundraising month thus far. Senator Barack Obama broke his own record by 11 million; where the previous record was $55 million raised in one month time, he raised $66 million last month.

The news comes days after analysts and commentators started wondering whether Obama’s decision not to accept federal funds was wise.

Although not accepting such funds meant he had no limits whatsoever to take into account, it did mean that he would have to raise considerably more than Senator John McCain, the Republican nominee for the presidency. If he would not, the benefits would - many said - not outweight the negatives.

McCain raised $47 million in the same month; a good number for the Republican nominee, especially considering the fact that he will receive more than $80 million in federal funds.

Obama’s recordbreaking fundraising numbers will undoubtedly result in more glowing headlines in many prominent media outlets in the coming days and weeks. This extra positive attention would come at a time when Obama was falling in the polls, and when most eyes were focused on Sarah Palin and McCain.

On top of raising $66 million, team Obama also added 500,000 extra donors; a clear indication that the Obama movement is still very much alive.
