Who’s Going Negative Again?

In line with the expectations of most observers, the campaign has turned more negative since the conclusion of the Republican Convention. In the first week of advertising after the conventions, Obama aired a higher percentage of negative ads than did McCain. 56 percent of the McCain campaign ads were negative, while 77 percent of Obama’s ads were negative.
But the usual suspects continue to spread the lie that McCain is running a negative, nasty, mean campaign. In the end, facts have nothing to do with this year’s campain, or – at least – not with how some report about it.
A commenter at NPR writes:
Here we are experiencing, regrettably, politics as usual. Does anyone ever wonder if this is somehow our fault for creating this atmosphere? After all, we’re the ones who respond so readily to the blatant, childish negativity.
I think that negative ads will always be part of the American system. They won’t go away. They work and they’ll always work.
The only thing that should go away is hypocritical politicians and their supporters everywhere pretending that they don’t do it. If you go negative, at least be honest about it.
