Talking Energy Policy

Several political commentators and analysts talked about energy policy recently on PJTV - a new initiative of Pajamas Media, an important advertiser on PoliGazette.

It was quite an interesting show, with Glenn Reynolds and others taking a closer look at the energy policy proposals of John McCain and Barack Obama.

Most interesting, perhaps, is the statement of Reynolds that both men are far from perfect. When it comes to energy, Reynolds said, McCain only looks better by comparison. Both are not energy heroes, however.

McCain’s main ‘weakness’ is his affiliation with the global warming movement. He believes that global warming is real, and that something has to be done about it. That is why he may sometimes support initiatives that would make it more difficult for America to become less dependent on foreign oil, for instance.

Obama’s energy policy, however, is even less pro-freedom and pro-energy independence. As the men at PJTV point out, Obama’s campaign is hijacked by environmentalists, who form an important base of the Democratic Party. Back in the Democratic primaries, Obama had to outflank people like Senator Chris Dodd, Joe Biden and, of course, Hillary Clinton. As a result, he moved increasingly further to the left and towards environmental groups who oppose initiatives like offshore drilling.

Energy was the main issue summer, but has taken a backseat ever since. The focus has been on the economy in the last couple of weeks, and energy has been ignored. It should, however, be a major issue nonetheless and it is likely that it will become a major issue in the coming months and, especially, years.
