Venezuela Closes Down McDonald’s

October 11th, 2008 By: Michael van der Galien | Tags:

Hugo Chavez, the president of Venezuela, continued to wage war on capitalism, and especially on American capitalistic enterprises on Thursday. The latest move of the Venezuelan government was to shut down 115 McDonald’s restaurants in Venezuela for a 48-hours period.

The government cited ‘tax irregularities’ as reason for the forced closure.

The closure comes after Venezuela stepped up its rhetoric and actions against the United States government, and against American enterprises operating in South America. A few weeks ago, Venezuela expelled the U.S. ambassador in support of Honduras which accused the U.S. of interference in its domestic problems.

One cannot help but wonder how long Western companies are allowed to operate in Venezuela.

He is hurting everyone who wants to open, operate, or patronize businesses on non-political criteria in Venezuela.

If George W. Bush ordered businesses run by people he didn’t like shut down, would you be blowing it off with “who is he hurting”?

    Didn’t think so.

The government cited ‘tax irregularities’ as reason for the forced closure.

This is the usual reason that is cited whenever the real problem is failure to pay bribes to government officials.  It is a pretty old gig.

Jason;I wasn’t "blowing it off"; I was asking a simple question.  It seemed to mee it wouldn’t hurt the US or Mcdonald’s and certainly not help Venezuelans.

Chavez is a thug.  He needs to ratchet up the anti-Americanism to stay in power now that the global economic collapse has lowered the price of oil and thereby cut his cash supply.  If the USA is so bad, why doesn’t he sell his oil to someone else?
