The Battle for Pennsylvania

Although Democrats Barack Obama and Joe Biden are leading rather comfortably in Pennsylvania polls, both Republicans and Democrats believe the state to be a key battleground state, which could go either way. One of the main reasons the Democratic ticket is leading so much in the polls is that many more Democratic voters were registered in recent weeks and months that Republicans. As we all know, that may not be the best indicator, considering the fact some ‘nonpartisan’ organizations commit fraud on a grand scale, in order to make it easier for Democrats to win elections.

The campaign in Pennsylvania is quite different from the one in other parts of the country. It seems to be less negative and character oriented. Instead, both parties talk about the economy constantly.

Of course, the two sides are attacking each other - what would American elections be without personal attacks? - but the main point of debate is the economy. The Obama campaign is depicting McCain as being out of touch, and unable to present plans that would help Americans. Obama, on the other hand, is presented as someone who lets the government work for people.

The McCain campaign, meanwhile, argues that Obama’s economic plans will cost the economy dearly in the long run. His propositions, the McCain team says, may sound nice and all for the short run, but they would do tremendous damage to the economy as a whole eventually. As such, team McCain advocate a completely different kind of approach, which is ‘growth oriented.’ People will suffer in the coming months and first few years, but afterwards, team McCain argues, McCain’s policies would help them all.

The strange thing is that if Team McCain would articulate this message clearly to the rest of the country as well, he would close the gap with Obama rather fast.

Lastly, on the issue of Pennsylvania polls published by quite well known pollsters, the McCain campaign said they simply don’t trust the results. Their own polls show that McCain certainly has a shot at winning this battleground state. Even leading Democrats in Pennsylvania agreed. They too believe the polls to be incorrect.
