New McCain Ad

October 16th, 2008 By: Michael van der Galien | Tags:

“Americans are catching on,” the narrator starts off in Senator John McCain’s latest ad.

Joe the Plummer’ Wurzelbacher can then be seen in heard telling Obama: “you’re new tax plan is gonna tax me more…”

To which Obama can be seen and heard answering: “it’s not that I wanna punish your success, I think that when you spread the wealth around it’s good for everybody.”

“Everybody?” the narrator asks. Leading papers call Obama’s taxes (quoting from several newspapers) “welfare,” “government handouts.”

“Obama raises taxes on seniors, on hard working families, to give welfare to those who pay none.

“Juuuust as you suspected, Obama is not truthful on taxes,” the ad concludes.

My take: it’s an effective ad – it’s critical, but not highly negative and ‘nasty.’ It’s on the issues, it’s using a ‘blue collar worker,’ who seems to represent ‘Main Street’ quite well, and it appeals to a feeling deeply ingrained in every American (or so we who are students of American culture) believe: taxes are a necessary evil, and the lower the taxes the better, for the government often does not use those taxes in an effective manner.

I’ve got to say, if McCain was a more effective campaigner, and better debater, he would in theory be able to make a comeback in the polls and to make election day very close indeed. Obama has to regret the exchange with Joe W.

Unsubstantiated claims do not make an effective ad. They do convince the convinced. You’re a sucker, only you don’t know it. That’s the best part of not being a sucker.
