Pro-Kadima Website Publishes Photo of Pope with Swastika

A pro-Kadima website, the Israeli party founded by Ariel Sharon, published a photo of Catholic Pope Benedict emblazoned with a superimposed Nazi swastika earlier Monday. The photo was taken off shortly later, after Tzipi Livni, the party’s new leader, told Yalla Kadima to remove it.

“Tzipi Livni strongly condemns this and we are working to remove this shameful picture. We strongly oppose this. It doesn’t represent Kadima,” spokesman Amir Goldstein said.

Yalla Kadima describes itself as a portal for “activists and supporters” of the Kadima party, and is furious with the pope for possibly promoting the sainthood of one of his predecessors, Pope Pius XII, or at least not stopping the process.

Pius was Pope during the Nazi-era, and has been blamed by many for not doing enough against the Nazis. He, many Jews say, turned a blind eye to the holocaust, pretending all to be well.

The Vatican disagrees, believing that Pius did what he could do.

The case is even more problematic due to Pope Benedict’s own past: he is German, raised in Germany before and during World War II. He was, even, a member of the Hitler Youth (as were most if not all Germans of his age of course).

Commenters who repeatedly or egregiously violate these standards or who attempt to argue publicly with editors regarding the comments policy may be banned from commenting further.

(1) Comments should address the substantive content of the post. Comments that repeatedly or blatantly misrepresent the content of the post or of others' comments are not welcome.
