Breaking: Barack Obama Becomes President-elect of the United States

With more than 270 votes (and more than my predicted 292 on some networks), all the networks are calling the election for Barack Obama.  Senator McCain must concede of course, and all the votes must be counted, but there’s no debating about it any more, I think.

Consider this an open thread to discuss this development.

Well, it’s a historical event and a great moment when an African-American has been elected president of the U.S. There’s no denying that, and even if the basis for that election is more flash than substance, Barack Obama does give all Americans the opportunity to put our racial divide in our rear-view mirror. I hope that happens; I’d just prefer a more fiscally responsible individual make that happen.

i guess, myself I could care less about the individuals race, although I can recognize the significance. What I generally liked about Obama was he comes across as seeming to be eager to do well.

    Guess we’ll find out.

I’m hoping that being denied a supermajority (as it seems to be) will put some sense into the Democrats. They’ll still be more likely to have to face that filibuster.

Good luck, Mr. President Elect. I sincerely hope that Obama will be able to resist the pressure from his own party to turn left, and that he will, indeed, make good on his promise to be “all of America’s president.” That is not going to be easy, and the economic problems facing him are huge. Still, in some ways, while it’s easy to heap the praise on him at his hour of success, the real proof of his abilities will not be seen tonight, but in two years.

McCain’s concession speech is better than anything I heard him give during the campaign. Nice endorsement of Sarah Palin, setting her up for a potential future on the national stage.

@Interested: race can’t be denied in this election or in the aftermath. It’s been 40 years since MLK - I truly hope people have grown up since then.

Indeed, there has not been a concession speech like that this entire race.

And Marc, I said I recognize the significance. As far as me personally goes - it’s meaningless.
