Pro-Life in the Obama Era
One social issue American liberals no doubt hope to push back on in the aftermath of Barack Obama’s election is that of abortion. While I’m hopeful that the new president will refrain from pursuing a radical abortion agenda, many pro-life causes must be feeling nervous about their missions’ future right about now.
In this post, Kathleen McKinley briefly describes some of the worthy organizations she’s worked with in support of the most innocent of human lives. Well worth the quick read and our support.

I think social issues like this take a back seat in the immediate future. We need to focus on our priories the economy and jobs, troops out of Iraq / what we are to do with the war on terror going forward. Social issues as complicated as this, should especially take a back burner for now. If he 9and the congress) spend lots of time pursuing these agendas (that were not the centerpiece of his campaign) then he will not be seen as trying to live up to his promises.
One of the persistent charges toward the “pro-life” movement is “they only care about a child while they’re in the womb!”. While I can’t speak for all folks who are pro-life I can comfortably state that I’ve met many who care for pregnant moms and their child, born and unborn, before and after delivery. We’ve personally housed a young unmarried teen during and after her pregnancy.
I believe part of the argument has been that many in the “pro-life” movement haven’t supported certain programs as vigorously as they have opposed abortion. Maybe a fair argument, though I would suggest that “passing legislation” is not the sole means of “caring”
The only strong influence on abortion I see in an Obama administration is court appointments. The only justices likely to retire in the next 4-8 years support Roe, so his appointment(s) will do no more than keep the status quo on this issue.
That will certainly be a serious disappointment for some, but it isn’t a move.
Grewgills: Obama has promised to sign FOCA which will codify the most extreme abortion rights interpretation of Roe v. Wade (and subsequent court decisions.) If this legislation is passed and signed, it will overturn just about every state legislation which puts any restriction on abortion, including waiting periods, parental notification for minors, and late term procedures.
