United States Military Commanders told president-elect Barack Obama on Saturday that he will have to readjust his plans for a withdrawal from Iraq.

Obama said during the campaign that he wanted to bring U.S. troops to withdraw within 16 months after he takes office. U.S. commanders now say that a “go slow approach to troop cuts” will be best.

“What we’ve learned from our conditions-based approach is that we have the possibility,” new U.S. commander in Iraq Gen. Ray Odierno told CNN, “of actually moving faster than we initially expected.”

However, Odierno went on to say, it is important that “we redeploy our forces in a careful manner,” which could very well mean slower than Obama promised American voters during the campaign.
