All (wo)men are equal(ly threatened)
My thoughts and prayers are with rabbi Holtzberg and his family in Mumbai, and with all the other hostages, the victims and their loving ones. Once again it is proven that those who hate Jews never hate only Jews, and that they will always end up killing scores of non-Jews as well. Jews take only the first, second, or third place on the long hate-lists of Jew-haters ( Islamist fanatics, Nazis, white supremacists, etc. ), and whoever cherishes Western values should beware when- and wherever Jews are threatened and attacked. As a historian I am not a fan of historical parallels – historical situations are never the same – but I cannot help but remember that six years after Hitler spoke openly about the destruction of the Jews of Europe, in addition to six million Jews tens of millions of other human beings had been killed and murdered. Islamism and other fanatic brands of Islam ( NB: Islamists are sunni Muslims, Ahmadinejad and the members of his regime are shi’ite ) threaten other Muslims, Hindus, Americans, and other Westerners just as much as they are a danger for Israel and the Jews.

I find all terrorists to be equally despicable no matter who they target, with the possible exception of terrorists who target children, that deserve an extra-special spot in hell. Still, the posts seems to suggest that the terrorists were mainly concerned with hurting Jews and I see nothing to suggest that this was the main motivation. In fact reports I’ve seen suggest that the terrorists (who have not yet been identified definitely) are targeting foreigners, especially westerners. Again, whether or not they are also targeting Jews I don’t know, but that hardly seems to be their main motivation.
Hi Claudia,
I am not suggesting – and definitely did not intend to suggest – that Jews were the main target of the attacks. Given the fact that ‘only’ one of the attacks was aimed specifically against Jews, such a suggestion would be wrong. What I do say, though, is that Jews are often favorite targets of terrorists and other people-haters, and that Jews appear prominently but never exclusively on the target and victim lists of Islamists, Nazis etc. This is why I stress that countering and fighting anti-Jewish and anti-Israeli threats and violence is not only an interest of Jews and Israel.
