Hillary Clinton: Palestinians Must Have Their Own State

February 4th, 2009 By: Michael van der Galien | Tags:

Former First Lady, Senator and now Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told journalists Tuesday she wants Israel to agree to a peace plan that would create a “viable Palestinian state” in the West Bank and Gaza.

Although we all support an independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state in theory, I find Clinton’s remarks terribly naieve. Hamas and Fatah cannot work with each other in any way whatsoever. The two hate each other’s guts. Hamas killed Fatah members on an unprecedented scale after it took over control of Gaza and plans to do the same thing in the West Bank.

On the other hand, Fatah hasn’t treated Hamas members well either. It systematically imprisoned, tortured and murdered them for years while busily stealing foreign money meant to help the Palestinian people.

Clinton may dream about an independent Palestinian state, but this is impossible to achieve as long as Hamas and Fatah can’t cooperate with each other. If American policy towards the region will aim at creating this utopia we – and especially those living in the region – will all experience difficult times indeed.

“she wants Israel to agree to a peace plan that would create a “viable Palestinian state” in the West Bank and Gaza.”

Israel is not the problem, as you can see from this report by Bernard Henry Levi:

[Olmert] “I made him an offer. 94,5% of the West Bank. Another 4,5% made up from territory within Israel proper. A tunnel, under Palestinian control, connecting the West Bank and Gaza, making up for the remaining 1% . As for Jerusalem, a logical and simple solution: Arab quarter will go to him; Jewish quarter will go to us. The Holy Sites will be placed under a joint administration comprised of Saudi, Jordanian, Israeli, Palestinian, and American representatives. Abu Mazen asked for a map, on which I would draw out the perimeters of my proposal. I did not, because I know him, and I know how it would be: the next time we meet, the proposal I’d drawn out would be taken as a starting point for further negotiations. Well, then… the offer is there… I am waiting “. Too good to be true? Is it possible that we have managed to sidestep, so recently, another opportunity to make peace?”

As for Hamas- Fatah relationship, you can read about it here, as reported by Khaled Abu Toameh, Palestinian journalist:

Wow. So now when Obama continues policy that you did not vocally disagree with when Bush continued it from earlier administrations we are treated to commentary on how naive it is of Clinton under the Obama administration to continue that same policy. How even handed.

Grewgills, are you prepared to be consistent about complaining about EVERY SINGLE INSTANCE of someone condoning something when their party is in power that they complain about when the other party is in power?

If so, you’ve already failed to do so, along with the entirety of your side of the political blogosphere that assured us that dissent was patriotic but who now loudly scream along (or at least fall suddenly silent) when it is Republicans who are attacked for dissenting during a period of claimed national emergency.

How not even handed of you.

And if you are not prepared to be consistent in your new standard of so-called “even-handedness”, then that by itself is failure to be even-handed.

So you’re being hypocritical either way here. And the fact that you are being hypocritical in your application of charges of hypocrisy adds unwitting irony to it. But don’t worry. I’m not laughing with you, I’m laughing at you.
