Washington Post Goes After Michael Steele; Accuses him of Violating Campaign-Finance Laws

It didn’t take Democrats long before they went after newly elected Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele. The Washington Post published a hit piece on the first African American to lead the GOP, accusing him of violating campaign-finance laws.

As the Corner’s Steve Hayward points out, however, ‘despite the purple language and frothy allegations of the story, my in-house (literally) campaign-finance expert says it is far from clear that Steele actually violated any of the increasingly arcane and impossible-to-explain federal campaign finance laws, but of course as we all know it’s the appearance of impropriety that counts for Republicans.’

More remarkable than that, though, is the following: ‘The U.S. attorney’s office inadvertently sent the confidential document, a defense sentencing memorandum filed under seal, to The Washington Post after the newspaper requested the prosecution’s sentencing memorandum.’

I’m sure it was an accident… these kinds of accidents happen all the time, especially when the victim is a Republican.

Of course, Steele could have violated aforementioned laws, but the WaPo’s article doesn’t convince me there’s a lot of evidence he did. Instead, it gives me the distinct impression that Democrats have decided to go after a Republican who could broaden the conservative base, just like they went after Governor Sarah Palin fearing she would draw middle class white women to the GOP.

I’d say they should wait a couple weeks before they label him the worst, most incompetent ever.

Steele whined that his accuser is a convicted felon. Of course, that convicted felon was Steele’s Senate Campaign Finance Chairman.
