Americans are Reaganites

February 27th, 2009 By: Michael van der Galien | Tags:

It may come as a surprise to Democrats who hoped that their massive electoral successes last year signified a dramatic shift to the left in the country, but Rasmussen finds that 59% of American voters still believe that Ronald Reagan was and is right when he said that “government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.”

It’s interesting to see that the same percentage gave this answer several months ago, well before the Democratically-controlled congress passed a $800 billion economic stimulus bill which does little to nothing to actually, you know, stimulate the economy.

I can only agree with PowerLine’s John Hinderaker when he writes: “My sense is that a great many Americans are rather sullen as they watch the government gleefully plotting to expropriate more of their wealth and take ever greater control over their lives. What the Democrats are doing is fundamentally unAmerican. That may not have been obvious in 1932, but it is pretty clear now.”

Democrats are clearly overreaching. Ironically, this is exactly what Republicans needed. All they need to now is to get their act together, encourage some charismatic and thoughtful leaders, use the Internet, organize effectively and open the attack on Democrats.

Right, not to nit-pick, but this was a survey of U.S. voters (as are most Rasmussen Polls), not just Americans. That is why I like Rasmussen polls better than Gallup, USA Today, etc. Some won’t agree, but the fact that this is voters, that just further adds credence to your point.

Republicans, if they want to return to power, need to do more than believe everyone already agrees with them. They need to offer policies that will help the voters want to gain.

“but all the same, I’ll take some money from whomever!”
