Obama Surrenders to Russia

March 3rd, 2009 By: Michael van der Galien | Tags:

Nothing has happened yet since Obama took office, but he has already decided to surrender to Russia:

Washington has told Moscow that Russian help in resolving Iran’s nuclear program would make its missile shield plans for Europe unnecessary, a Russian daily said on Monday, citing White House sources.

U.S. President Barack Obama made the proposal on Iran in a letter to his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, Kommersant said, referring to unidentified U.S. officials.

I’m sure that America’s allies in the region, who agreed to host parts of the missile defense shield and angered Russia by doing so, are very happy with Obama’s offer. After all, they are now engaged in a minor cold war with the Russians and fear Russian blackmail possibly even Russian armed interventions. That’s nothing, of course, they can easily deal with it considering their size, large populations and military strength.

Hmm.

Swell. We will doubtless be giving the finger to all our allies, and scrambling to head home to glorious isolation. That did not work well in the 1920s, but the left wing of the Democratic Party seems to want to try it again. Look for a Clinton – Putin agreement sometime soon. Think of it as Kellogg Briand Pact 2.0. Swell.

This is exactly the type of approach the US needs to be taking with the Russians and Iran.

The missile shields we were working on were a provocation and an insult to Russia pure and simple. If by abandoning those plans we can become friends with Russia again and coax the Iranians into abandoning any nuclear plans they may have, then it’s a win-win.

It’s not like Russia is any position to take over eastern Europe anyways. First, there is little evidence that they have any such ambitions. Even if they did, their own economy is in a terrible condition because of the low price of oil.

It isn’t surrender, it’s realism with a shot of playing the Russians. The MDS really doesn’t work, outside of scripted tests. Iran doesn’t have any nukes or robust missiles to carry their nonexistent nukes.
