The missile shields we were working on were a provocation and an insult to Russia pure and simple. If by abandoning those plans we can become friends with Russia again and coax the Iranians into abandoning any nuclear plans they may have, then it's a win-win. It's not like Russia is any position to take over eastern Europe anyways. First, there is little evidence that they have any such ambitions. Even if they did, their own economy is in a terrible condition because of the low price of oil. This is exactly the type of approach the US needs to be taking with the Russians and Iran.
