Unemployment in California hits 11%

governor schwarzenegger and wife maria ShriverGovernor Arnold Schwarzenegger has not been able to revive his state’s economy and control its growing unemployment rates:

California’s jobless rate will climb to a staggering 11.9 percent between April and June next year, and double-digit unemployment will linger in the nation’s most populous state at least through 2011, according to a new economic forecast. The somber outlook in the quarterly Anderson Forecast from the University of California at Los Angeles, to be released Wednesday, came as the state struggles with a housing meltdown, budget crisis and slack consumer demand that has hurt the retail, manufacturing and trade sectors at the heart of the state economy.

The projected jobless rate would grow to 11.9 percent between April and June 2010, and average 11.7 percent for that year. The figure stood at 10.5 percent in February. Forecasters say it will average 11 percent for 2009.

Though the California economy will be growing in 2011, it will not be generating enough jobs to drive the unemployment rate below double digits until the following year, the report projected.

Schwarzenegger is one of the most famous moderate Republican governors in America. A couple of years ago, he was highly popular among moderates within the Republican Party, Independent voters and even moderate Democrats. In recent years, however, Schwarznegger has lost most of his popularity, mostly because of his inability to deal with his state’s economic and budget problems.

What California needs right now is a governor who’s willing to make tough decisions, regardless of whether or not the opposition gets its panties up in a bunch. In short, the state needs a terminator, not a compromiser.

You’re exactly right on the money. So many Americans are losing their jobs and having to make incredible sacrifices, and make those tough decisions. Right now is not a time for business as usual politics, but rather the time for our elected officials to demonstrate true leadership.
