Murphy vs. Tedisco: Undecided – Coleman / Franken revisited

The results of the special election in the NY-20 district (New York) are in: undecided. According to the last reports, Democrat Scott Murphy leads by 65 votes – this while more than 150.000 New Yorkers voted.
Although still a close race with a small advantage for Murphy, there is some good news for Republican candidate Jim Tedisco: approximately 10.000 absentee and military votes haven’t been counted yet.Since most members of the military are Republicans, Tedisco could very well pull this one off.
Sadly we’ll have to wait until mid April before knowing the final results. Well, hopefully that is. You see, it is likely that both sides will declare a legal war after the results are officially announced. Such a legal war can drag on for many months, as proved by the situation in Minnesota where Senator Norm Coleman and wannabe-Senator Al Franken are still engaged in such hostilities.
As I wrote a week ago or so, the election in New York is of incredible political importance. President Barack Obama threw his weight behind Murphy; the president’s impressive campaign and PR machine was used to help Murphy secure a victory. National Republican leaders, however, kept themselves far from the race. This means that if Tedisco wins, journalists and pundits will interpret it as a defeat for Obama first and foremost. If Tedisco loses, however, it is no biggy. As Hot Air explains: “If we lose, it means nothing, and if we win, it means everything.”

How come Politico reports that the Republicans had some advantage in this district AND the RNC and other GOP groups poured significant dollars into it?

Just remember that the Gillibrand held this slot and she is a Democrat. And she won that slot by 24 point margin. Also Obama recently won this district in his election to the presidency. Just saying that this district is conservative ain’t necessarily so. Believe me when I say that the Democrats threw all they could into this race short of Obama coming personally to campaign with Murphy. A loss here by the Dems will speak volumes to DC
