MegMac: Rove and Cheney Had Their 8 Years. Now Go Away

April 24th, 2009 By: Michael van der Galien | Tags: , , , ,

meghan mccainMeghan McCain, Senator John McCain’s daughter, continues to attack conservative Republican leaders like Karl Rove and Dick Cheney.

Where she normally attacks them on The Daily Beast she now did so on The View, with Woopi Goldberg.

Although she attacked these Republicans – and most are becoming a bit tired of it, to put it mildly – she did have some interesting thing to say this time. She emphasized that she believes the Republican Party has “a lot of potential,” but that it has to become a Big Tent party once again. She believes it should support gay marriage, or at least not be overly dismissive of it. When asked whether she also believes it should become ‘pro-choice,’ the said “no, I’m pro-life.”

What is most interesting to me is that Meghan and the far right have an important characteristic in common: they all want the Republican Party to become their mirror image. If that is what this battle is about, it will truly blow up the party for no big party can be ‘this or that.’

No, what Meghan and others should fight for is the recognition that different opinions make a party better, as long as all members subscribe to the same basic principles. They have to unite behind something – but creating an echo chamber is disastrous.

If Meghan McCain would make this more clear, that she does not want the party to become like her in every possible way (she did say at a certain moment that she does not want to push out social conservatives, but that they want to get rid of her), but that she believes there should be room for an internal debate about most issues.

Lastly, I’m with Hot Air’s AP when he opines that “talking about the things you have in common with most Republicans rather than dwelling on the differences would go a long way towards earning you their respect, albeit at the price of losing you some media appearances.”

“Meghan McCain, Senator John McCain’s daughter, continues to attack conservative Republican leaders like Karl Rove and Dick Cheney.”

One of the reasons these past eight years have looked the way they have is because Rove and Cheney were recognized and treated as leaders and direction-giving figures. At the top of the site there is now a good article about Hayek and the importance for conservatives to drop the soundbiting and catering to the base, well that’s Rove’s only forte and “contribution” to conservatism. They are not leaders today – and the left and the right alike should be joyous – and Meghan is doing her party a favor is she’s telling it to stop indulging on the equivalent of junk food: satisfying at first but ultimately making you bloated, unattractive and with diminishing health.

She’s getting played. She’s also falling into the same “trap” as Rush Limbaugh. Because I have a platform and people listen, I have something important to say.

I’m writing this as I’m watching this clip….boy is she getting played.
