Sarkozy: Israeli Strike Against Iran Would Be a “Catastrophe”

sarkozy on iran - IsraelSpeaking after a summit of G8 and other leaders in Italy at which they agreed on the need to pursue a negotiated deal with Tehran to halt a programme which Western powers fear hides a plan to acquire nuclear weapons, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said that a unilateral attack by Israel against Iran to thwart the Islamic republic’s nuclear ambitions would be an “absolute catastrophe.”

Quite probably so, indeed. Considering the domestic problems the extremist regime in charge of Iran has to deal with, it seems likely that an Israeli airstrike would truly result in it going insane. Its struggling for political survival already; an Israeli attack could severely weaken it military as well.

Like a cat pushed into a corner, the mad Mullahs could prove to be extremely unpredictable and therefore dangerous.

On the other hand, they already are. The difference is that although they are capable of hurting Western interests and Israel now, they’ll be able to do a lot more damage if they get their hands on nuclear weapons. How’s that for a “catastrophe”?
