Senator Burris Not Running?
National Public Radio is reporting that “an important announcement” will be issued by the junior U.S. Senator form Illinois. They cite several sources in the Democratic party as saying Roland Burris has decided not to run for election on his own in 2010 when the term he was appointed to finish expires.
This will not surprise anyone, given that there have been important questions about the propriety of appointing Burris in the first place, and his testimony to the Senate Ethics Committee was, in the most charitable terms, incomplete and misleading. Reportedly,Burris will cite his inability to raise money for a campaign as one reason for his decision to step down next year.
Numerous Democratic hopefuls appear to be ready to file. At least two Republicans are considering filing for the position as well.
